TN LCD screen usually has three modes: full penetration, half transmission and reflection. Liquid crystal is not active luminescence, need to provide external light source. The light source of the full transparent liquid crystal comes from the back of the liquid crystal; the light source of the reflective liquid crystal comes from the front of the liquid crystal, and is reflected to the eye of the observer by the polarizer of the liquid crystal screen; the semi transparent liquid crystal is between the two, including the light from the back of the liquid crystal and the reflected light in the front. Therefore, the full transparent liquid crystal needs to use the backlight, the reflection does not need the backlight, and the semi transparent liquid crystal can use or not use the backlight. LCD without backlight can not be observed in the dark.
